Junnu Leikola

Junnu Leikola is currently the only physician in Finland to hold specialist degrees both in plastic surgery and maxillofacial surgery in medicine as well as oral and maxillofacial surgery in dentistry. After gaining his DDS and MD degrees he worked in general surgery as well as in oral and maxillofacial surgery. By 2003 he had completed the surgical common trunk training and after gaining the oral and maxillofacial degrees from the University of Helsinki he pursued to plastic surgery in 2005 and has been working in the Helsinki University Hospital’s Department of Plastic Surgery ever since. He gained his degree in plastic surgery 2008 and 2016 was appointed as the head and chief physician of pediatric plastic surgery and the Cleft and Craniofacial Center, a national reference center for these malformations.

His special interest has been in the field of congenital malformations, especially clefts and craniofacial surgery. In 2009-2010 he worked as a craniofacial fellow at the Necker Hospital in Paris.  He has published over 70 international peer reviewed original articles, book chapters and has supervised several doctoral theses. He was appointed as a docent of plastic surgery to the University of Helsinki 2016. Dr. Leikola is currently an active member of the International Society of Craniofacial Surgery and  president of the European Society of Craniofacial Surgery.
